G. Wendell Richmond, M.D. attended the University of Oklahoma Medical School obtaining his medical degree in 1976. He then completed an internal medicine residency at Rush Medical Center in 1979 followed by a two year allergy/immunology fellowship at the same institution. Upon completion of his fellowship he remained at Rush as a attending physician on the allergy/immunology service. During that time he was the medical director of the allergy/immunology fellowship program.
Early in his career he developed a clinical and academic interest in primary immunodeficiency diseases. He participated in many of the clinical research studies of early immunoglobulin replacement products. He initiated the second immunoglobulin home infusion program in the United States in 1984. In 1998 he left the university setting and entered private practice. He continued to be involved in the investigation of new immunoglobulin products and initiated the first trial of subcutaneous immunoglobulin therapy in 2001.
His interest in immunologic mechanisms of allergy and immune dysfunction has continued to grow over time. He is also interested in the diagnosis and treatment of asthma, allergic rhinitis, polypoid rhinitis, urticaria, and angioedema in older children and adults.
Dr. Richmond is the past president of the Illinois Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. He is a member of the Clinical Immunology Society and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.
Dr. Richmond is married and has two grown children and three grandchildren. In his spare time he enjoys riding his bike, working in the yard and helping with the grandkids.
