In 1982 Dr. Abhi Ganju, M.D. began her solo practice of treating asthma and allergic disease. In 2000 Dr. Renee Lantner, M.D. joined the practice after first pursuing a career in academic medicine at Loyola University Medical Center for nearly ten years.
Our philosophy
We strongly believe you and your family should be active participants in managing asthma and allergic conditions. You will receive a detailed evaluation related to each condition, which may include allergy or asthma testing if appropriate.
You will then receive careful, individualized follow-up to insure correct understanding of techniques and medication use, which improves the success of any treatment. You deserve to be as informed as possible, which is why we highly value patient education, offering state-of-the-art treatments with options tailored to each patient’s specific and personal situation.
Your treatment goals should include minimizing medication use by taking advantage of other areas of health management, including diet, exercise, improving the home and work environment, and disease-modifying treatments, such as allergen vaccines.
What to expect at an appointment
At the first appointment once you have registered, a nurse will ask about the reasons for your visit, ask about the home, school or work environments, medical and family history, and medications. Then the doctor will complete the evaluation with additional questions and a physical examination. If allergy testing is needed, it may be done at the first visit, as long as the patient is not taking antihistamines (please see list). If there is a concern about possible asthma, a breathing test called spirometry may be performed in older children and adults. Sometimes inhaled medication, like albuterol, is given followed by another breathing test in 20 minutes. If possible, patients should avoid certain asthma medications on the day of their appointment in case spirometry may be done.
Please allow at least one hour for the first appointment.
At follow-up visits, a nurse will first ask about changes in symptoms and medications since the last visit. Occasionally additional allergy testing is done if previously scheduled, and spirometry may be repeated if done before.
We encourage you to make an appointment that best fits your schedule, but we always strive to accommodate any patient should an urgent matter arise.
We accept most major insurance plans. If you have special circumstances, our friendly staff will be happy to answer any questions you have regarding payment arrangements.
